Problem Solving Training

for Police Promotional Candidates

Problem Solving Training for Police Promotional Candidates is presented as a tutoring session to small groups—no larger than 5 students—and can be done either through Zoom or in-person in our South Florida training locations. If you have ever attended a large group promotional training session, you know what a waste of time and money they are because the practice scenarios are very simplistic in nature. Do you want to get in front of a large group and give away your techniques? Of course not, no one does!

The individual sessions last around two (2) hours, and it is recommended that students sign up for at least the first two (2) sessions where they will learn all the techniques necessary to successfully complete the Oral portions of a police promotional process or assessment center test. If the promotional process involves handling an In-Basket Exercise, we have a separate tutoring session on how to successfully complete that portion of the exam or assessment center test.

These promotional exams are administered throughout the U.S. by some of the following companies:

Overview

Most police promotional oral exams use simulation exercises to test the candidate’s abilities. These exercises usually revolve around four main topics: (1) handling a crime problem, (2) addressing a community group about crime, (3) handling a critical incident in the field, and (4) addressing a subordinate performance issue(s) in a one-on-one meeting. We teach you how to successfully handle these exercises by covering the following main topics:

    • What is an assessment center?

    • The design of an assessment

    • The behavioral dimensions

    • The strategies to achieve success

    • The 5 steps of the problem solving model

    • Creating practice scripts

    • Processing the In-Basket

    • What to do the day of the exam

Session are two (2) hours long and are prepared for no more than 3 to 5 participants. We keep the groups small because these are the people that you will practice with on your own to get better for the exam. Practice is everything in being able to score high in these oral exercises/scenarios. The session cost includes a notebook and copies of reference materials we used during the two-hour training, including three (3) sample scripts for you to reference in creating your own practice scripts for handling these oral scenarios. For the In-Basket portion of the exam we include sample response memorandums for the 3 top priority items of the typical In-Basket and also include 2 simulation tests.
